THE TOP AND THE BALL Original by Hans Christian Andersen

THE TOP AND THE BALL
                                                  Original by Hans Christian Andersen

Once there was a boy who had box with a top and a ball inside. The top said to the ball, “Shall we be married? We shall look so lovely together.”

The ball said” How could you even ask?”

The next day the boy painted the top red and yellow and put a brass nail inside.  The top looked spectacular when he spun around. “Now we shall be married. I spin and you dance.” The ball didn’t reply.

The next day the boy took them out and played with them. The ball kept on bouncing until its ninth bounce when flew out of sight. The top said “I know where she has gone. She flew into the swallow’s nest and married the swallow.”

Years later the top flew into the gutter and fell into a big pile of garbage. The top found a ball which looked like cabbage.  The ball said she was once engaged to a swallow, but fell into the garbage from the roof. Then the servant came and found the top, but didn’t recognize the ball. The servant picked up the top and brought it back to the boy.
